Ice bath
Cold water recovery: ice bath tubs for Malang and Batu
A deep timber tub held between 3 and 15 °C, built for clubs, academies, gyms and guesthouses.
An ice bath Malang build starts with a deep tub in larch or thermowood, lined and filtered, and a chiller that pins the water anywhere from 3 to 15 °C. It is used by football clubs and academies, padel and gym members, cyclists off the Batu climbs, and guesthouses. Indicative IDR 45–90 million, installed in 1–2 weeks.

Why do Malang clubs and academies need an ice bath?
Because the training load is real and the recovery window is short. Professional football sides in Malang put players into cold water at 8–18 °C for around ten minutes after matches, and their medical staff sequence cold then warm. Academies follow the same protocol with younger squads, padel courts want a recovery corner that justifies the session rate, and the gyms around Soekarno-Hatta run members through heat and cold all day.
The demand is not only sporting. Cyclists finishing the Batu and Pujon climbs, runners on the Ijen boulevard and hikers back from Panderman want the same thing, and so do guesthouse owners in Bumiaji who have worked out that a tub beside a cabin photographs better than either alone.
A club ice bath is specified differently from a household one: deeper tubs, heavier filtration, a chiller with enough capacity to recover between groups, and a maintenance sheet written for staff rather than owners. We price those per tub after seeing the training schedule — the detail is in our article on cold water for Malang athletes.

How does a plunge chiller hold 3–15 °C in this climate?
Half a horsepower to a full one is all it takes. The chiller pushes heat out of the water across a titanium exchanger and dumps it into the air; the controller is set once and the tub stays where you put it, 10 °C on a 29 °C afternoon in Blimbing or a 17 °C one in Batu. Malang's cool nights are a quiet advantage — the unit cycles less and recovers quicker than it would on the coast, so a highland club tub turns round back-to-back groups on a smaller chiller.
Water clarity is underestimated. Cartridge filtration with ozone or UV keeps a household tub clear for four to six weeks instead of clouding in days. An insulated cover keeps sun, leaves and heat out; a proper drain and fall means emptying takes minutes. The visible body is larch or thermowood, with the liner waterproofing behind it.
Depth matters more than length in an ice bath. A tub at 1.1 m deep lets an adult sit with shoulders under water, which is the position the protocols assume; a shallow tub means a cold back and a warm neck. For two users we build to 1.6 m long rather than making a single tub wider.
Where does an ice bath go, and what power does it need?
Electrically this is the easy build. A ½–1 HP chiller draws roughly 750–875 W on a single phase, so even a 2,200 VA house copes without an upgrade. It needs its own circuit with an ELCB, a weatherproof position and 30–40 cm of clear air round the fan. Running cost is IDR 300,000–700,000 a month.
Put it near a drain and near the heat, under cover where you can. In Araya and Permata Jingga that means the back terrace; in a Suhat gym, beside the changing rooms; in Batu, the deck next to the cabin. Beginners should open at 12–15 °C for two minutes rather than 3 °C for ten, nobody should plunge alone, and anyone pregnant or with a cardiac condition should ask a doctor first.
Most clients build the tub alongside a dry sauna or a roofed outdoor cabin — the contrast circuit is what people come back for. A wellness zone starts at an indicative IDR 250 million; combinations are on the price page.

Frequently asked questions
What temperature should a beginner start at?
Twelve to fifteen degrees for two minutes. Regular users settle at 10–12 °C for three to five minutes; athletes work at 8–10 °C. Leave the water when the shivering sharpens; there is no prize for staying.
How often is the water replaced?
Every four to six weeks for a household with filtration and ozone or UV. Club tubs used by squads need more frequent changes and a stronger filter, which we size to the number of players.
Is the chiller noisy beside a guesthouse terrace?
About the level of an outdoor air-conditioning unit, and only while it is pulling temperature down. We keep it clear of bedroom windows and mount it on anti-vibration feet.
Can you chill a tub we already own?
Often yes. A chiller with filtration for an existing tub is IDR 25–55 million indicative, provided the tub holds water and we can route the pipework. Send photographs through the contact page.
