Who actually asks for a steam room here?

Three kinds of client, wanting three different things. Householders in Araya and Blimbing rebuilding a master bathroom, who would rather give up two square metres of tile than a whole bedroom to a timber cabin. Gyms along Soekarno-Hatta and near the campuses, where members simply expect wet heat alongside dry. And Batu guesthouses adding an indoor option for the weeks when the terrace sits under cloud.

There is a fourth, quieter group too. Malang is a university town with several medical faculties, and enquiries arrive steadily from people who simply find wet heat at 45 °C kinder on the chest than dry air at 85 °C. That is a personal preference, not a prescription — we make no medical claims either way.

The trade-off, honestly stated: a wet room costs more per square metre than a timber cabin, the programme runs 3–5 weeks rather than 2–4, and the upkeep is heavier. What you get back is twenty comfortable minutes at a stretch, a room children tend to actually like, and a finish in tile and light rather than plank.

Getting the waterproofing right so it actually lasts

A steam room goes together in a fixed sequence, and that sequence is most of the job. Liquid membrane over slab and walls first, lapped at every junction and carried behind every finish. The floor is laid to fall toward a trapped gully. The ceiling pitches so condensate runs to the walls instead of dripping onto whoever is sitting below. Mosaic goes on last. Nearly every room we get called in to rescue turns out to be one where that first step got rushed.

The generator sits in a ventilated cupboard a few metres off, positioned so the service valve can be reached without lifting a single tile — obvious once you say it, and routinely ignored anyway. Benches are formed in concrete and tiled, never timber. Doors and screens are 8 mm tempered glass with a full-height seal, because a weak seal is exactly what pushes moisture into next door's plasterboard and generates the complaint about the neighbouring ceiling.

In an older Malang house we check the substrate before quoting anything. Lime plaster and a mixed brick-and-render wall do not behave like new blockwork, and sometimes the right call is a new independent inner leaf rather than tanking straight onto what is already there.

What the building needs to supply: power, water, drainage

A 2×2 m room wants a 6–9 kW generator behind it, which reads as 7,700–11,000 VA at the meter. Newer clusters in Araya and Permata Jingga are usually there already; a Klojen house on 2,200–4,400 VA needs a PLN capacity change first, filed ahead of fabrication and paid for by the owner. The circuit itself runs heat-resistant cable on its own breaker with an ELCB.

Water needs decent pressure and, in the harder-water pockets of Malang and Batu, a softener — scale will otherwise cut an element's life roughly in half. Drainage needs a genuine fall to a trapped gully; a token slope just stores up smells for later. Guesthouses on tank or spring supply above Batu get a filter plus a tank sized to how long sessions actually run.

Running cost sits around IDR 300,000–600,000 a month, plus a flush on the schedule set out in the manual. Commercial rooms for a gym, spa or hotel start at an indicative IDR 150 million and run 4–8 weeks; fixing a leaking room somebody else built typically runs IDR 15–50 million. Still deciding?
