A steam room runs at 40–45 °C with humidity close to 100 per cent, gentler on the airways than dry heat. We build them turnkey: tanking, floor falls, mosaic, sloped ceiling, 6–9 kW generator and glazing. Indicative IDR 50–100 million for 2×2 m, completed in 3–5 weeks after the free survey.

Who asks for a steam room in Malang?
Three kinds of client, and they want different things. Householders in Araya and Blimbing rebuilding a master bathroom, who would rather convert two square metres of it than surrender a bedroom to a timber cabin. Gyms along Soekarno-Hatta and near the campuses, where members expect wet and dry heat side by side. And guesthouses in Batu adding an indoor option for the weeks when the terrace is under cloud.
The medical crowd is a fourth, quieter group. Malang is a teaching city with several medical faculties, and enquiries arrive steadily from people who find wet warmth at 45 °C easier on the chest than dry air at 85 °C. That is a preference, not a prescription; we make no health claims.
The honest trade-off: per square metre a wet room is dearer than a timber cabin, the programme runs 3–5 weeks instead of 2–4, and the upkeep is heavier. In return you get twenty easy minutes at a stretch, a room children like, and a finish of tile and light rather than plank.

How is a steam room waterproofed so it lasts?
A steam room is built in a fixed order, and the order is most of the job. Liquid membrane over slab and walls, lapped at every junction and carried behind all finishes. Floor laid to fall towards a trapped gully. Ceiling pitched so condensate travels to the walls rather than onto the person below. Mosaic last. The rooms we are asked to rescue are nearly always rooms where that first step was shortened.
The generator lives in a ventilated cupboard a few metres away, set so its service valve can be reached without a single tile coming off — obvious, and routinely forgotten. Benches are formed and tiled, not timber. Doors and screens are 8 mm tempered glass with a full-height seal, because a poor seal is what pushes moisture into the plasterboard next door and produces the complaint about the neighbouring ceiling.
In older Malang houses we check the substrate before quoting. Lime plaster and a mixed brick and render wall behave differently from new blockwork, and sometimes the right answer is a new independent inner leaf rather than tanking directly onto the original.
Power, water and drainage: what the building must provide
A 2×2 m steam room wants a 6–9 kW generator behind it, and that reads as 7,700–11,000 VA at the meter. Newer clusters in Araya and Permata Jingga usually have that already; a house in Klojen on 2,200–4,400 VA needs a PLN change of capacity first, applied for before fabrication and paid by the owner. The circuit uses heat-resistant cable, a dedicated breaker and an ELCB.
Water needs reasonable pressure and, in the harder-water parts of Malang and Batu, a softener — scale will halve the life of an element otherwise. Drainage must be a genuine fall to a trapped gully; a token slope stores up smells. Guesthouses on tank or spring supply above Batu get a filter and a tank sized around session length.
In use, budget IDR 300,000–600,000 a month plus a flush on the schedule in the manual. Commercial rooms for a gym, spa or hotel start at an indicative IDR 150 million and take 4–8 weeks; repairing a leaking room built by somebody else runs IDR 15–50 million. Frequently asked questions
Can we convert the bathroom we already have?
Usually, provided there is a floor drain, ceiling height to fall and a route for the generator. Everything comes off back to bare substrate first: a membrane only works unbroken, and there is no way to fake that.
Will the moisture damage the plasterboard ceiling next door?
Not if the cubicle is tanked and sealed properly and the door has a full-height seal. Damage next door is a symptom of a failed membrane or a poor seal, and it is exactly what we are called in to fix.
How long before it is ready to use?
Between eight and fifteen minutes in a 2×2 m cubicle, according to generator size and how cold the tiles start. Put it on a timer and the wait disappears.
Does it suit a Batu guesthouse?
It can, though a roofed outdoor cabin usually earns more and asks less of housekeeping between changeovers. That is the advice you get on the survey, not the larger invoice.
