Panel, 50 mm rockwool, an aluminium foil vapour barrier, a 20 mm ventilation gap, then the cladding you see. Skip the foil or the gap and the timber is mouldy inside three rainy seasons.
Walls in western red cedar, Scandinavian spruce or thermowood; benches in aspen or abachi so the back of a leg never meets hot wood; ulin and bengkirai kept for decking outside.
We read the meter in person, match the heater to the cabin’s volume, and run heat-resistant SiHF cable on its own breaker with an ELCB — on every job, no exceptions.
A ½–1 HP chiller holding 3–15 °C, cartridge filtration backed by ozone or UV, an insulated cover and a proper drain — built to be used daily, not emptied and forgotten.
Why Malang is unusually good sauna country
Mostly it comes down to elevation. Kota Malang holds at 440–667 m, warm enough by day at around 28 °C but back to 18–24 °C once the sun drops, and during the dry-season bediding stretch from July to September, Sukun and Lowokwaru can slide to 15 °C overnight. Go higher and it gets sharper still: Dau and Karangploso have logged 10–12 °C on August mornings, while Batu, up at 700–1,200 m, sits at 16–20 °C for whole afternoons. Few Indonesian cities make you want a properly warm room before bed — here, an 80 °C cabin is just sensible, not a luxury prop.
The housing stock itself is oddly varied for a city this size. Jalan Besar Ijen and Klojen are lined with colonial houses on four-metre ceilings and wiring from the 1930s. Araya, Blimbing and Permata Jingga are newer clusters with meters to match. Puncak Tidar has hillside plots with little room to spare, Batu and Bumiaji hold hundreds of guesthouses competing on the same booking sites, and the campus belt through Dinoyo, Tlogomas and Suhat is thick with premium boarding houses and small flats. No single cabin design covers all of that — which is the reason we kept six.
Sport is the other half of the story, and here it is mainstream rather than niche. Football clubs and academies bring players down to 8–18 °C water for recovery, cyclists take on the Batu and Pujon climbs most weekends, runners log kilometres along the Ijen boulevard, and padel courts and round-the-clock gyms near the campuses now list recovery as a membership perk. The sequence does not change with the address — only the drive time to get there does.

Frequently asked questions
How cold does it actually get here, and does that change the build?
Kota Malang nights run 18–24 °C most of the year and drop toward 15 °C in the July–September bediding weeks; Batu sits several degrees under that again. We size heaters for those real lows rather than a generic spec sheet, which is why an 80 °C cabin here earns its keep on an ordinary Tuesday, not just as a showpiece.
What is a realistic budget across the range?
As a starting point: a custom 2×2 m dry cabin sits at IDR 60–120 million, an economy build from IDR 40 million, prefab IDR 15–35 million delivered and assembled, infrared IDR 30–70 million, a turnkey steam room IDR 50–100 million, and a chilled plunge IDR 45–90 million. Do you reach guesthouses out past Batu, toward Bumiaji or Pujon?
Regularly — it is a big share of the order book. Everything ships as panels light enough for two people to carry, which matters on the narrow lanes above Batu, and Pujon runs are timed around weekend traffic on the Batu road. Details are on the Batu area page.
Our meter is only 2,200 VA — is anything still possible?
Yes. An infrared cabin pulls 1.7–2.4 kW and sits comfortably on that supply with no upgrade. A dry sauna's 6–9 kW heater needs 7,700–11,000 VA, which means a PLN capacity change first — paid by the owner, and we price it out before any quote is signed.
From first message to first heat — how long is that, roughly?
A home sauna runs 2–4 weeks on site once 1–2 weeks of material supply is done. Infrared is fitted in 1–2 days, a prefab cabin in a day or two once built, an outdoor cabin or a plunge tub in 1–2 weeks, a steam room in 3–5 weeks, and commercial jobs in 4–8 weeks.
Can you fit out a cold-water corner for a football academy or club?
It is one of our steadier lines of work. Squads need deeper tubs, heavier filtration and a chiller that can recover between groups, so pricing is done per tub once we have seen the training schedule. There is more detail in our article on cold water for Malang athletes.
