A prefab cabin is cut to panels in our Lowokwaru workshop and bolted together at your address in a day. It suits small houses, premium boarding houses near the campuses, and Batu homestays that want heat without a building programme attached. As a guide: IDR 15–35 million for a mini unit, one to two days to assemble.
Prefab against custom: what actually changes
Just the process, not the standard behind it. A custom cabin gets measured, drawn and cut to your actual walls, so it can follow an awkward corner or a sloped ceiling without complaint. A prefab cabin comes from a fixed set of sizes between 1.2×1.0 m and 2×2 m — panels already cut, heater already matched to the volume, the whole thing standing in a day or two rather than three weeks.
What stays constant is the wall build-up: the same five layers — panel, rockwool, an aluminium foil vapour barrier, a ventilation gap, cladding — the same aspen or abachi benches, the same 8 mm tempered glass door, the same imported heater with its guard and factory cover. Whatever gets saved comes out of drawing time and site time, never out of the wall itself.
What you trade away is flexibility. A beam in the wrong place, a full glass front, seating for six — any of those points toward a custom cabin instead. But with a clear 1.5 by 1.2 metres and a week to spare, prefab wins on every measure that matters.
Who ends up buying prefab here
Three groups keep coming back to it. Owners of premium boarding houses and small flats around Dinoyo, Tlogomas and Suhat, where a compact sauna is the one thing that sets a listing apart from thirty near-identical ones. Homestay owners in Batu and Karangploso who want the photo without closing the property for a month to get it. And families in Sukun and Blimbing trying the idea out before committing to a full custom build.
Sizes range from a 1.2×1.0 m single-person box to a 2×2 m unit for four. Pinewood models heat through in about half an hour; red cedar costs more and rewards you with a better smell. Everything arrives as panels that fit through a standard doorway, which is exactly why prefab reaches upper floors and tight stairwells a fully assembled cabin never could.
Because it is bolted together rather than glued, a prefab cabin comes apart just as easily. Tenants take it with them; homestay owners shift it between properties. We charge for the move and re-test the electrics at the new address, but the cabin itself has no opinion about where it ends up.
Will a 4,400–5,500 VA supply actually carry one?
Usually, yes. A 3 kW heater suits a single-person box and wants around 4,400 VA; a 3.6 kW heater for two sits comfortably on 5,500 VA; a 6 kW heater for a 2×2 m cabin needs 7,700 VA. Older student housing around Dinoyo often sits at just 2,200 VA, where the cabin will trip the instant a water pump kicks in — from there it is either a PLN capacity increase at the owner's cost, or an infrared cabin instead.
We read the meter ourselves at the survey rather than trust the paperwork, because in older boarding houses the recorded capacity and the installed one often disagree. From there the circuit gets done properly: SiHF cable, a dedicated breaker, an ELCB, and a heat test with you watching before we pack up.
Running cost stays modest at this size — roughly IDR 200,000–500,000 a month for regular use. Frequently asked questions
We are ordering from outside Malang — how does delivery and fitting work?
Panels leave the Lowokwaru workshop by van, or travel as freight for addresses further out, Surabaya included — flat-packed, so nothing oversized to arrange. Our own crew still handles assembly on site rather than passing it to a local contractor, which is the point of choosing prefab in the first place. We fix a fitting date once the panels are confirmed to have arrived.
Can the cabin move house with me?
Yes. It is bolted, not glued, so it comes apart into panels and goes back together at the new address. We charge for the move and re-test the circuit once it lands.
How heavy is it, and will it fit through a bedroom door?
Panels are sized for two people to carry through a standard 80 cm door and up an ordinary staircase. Nothing here needs a crane, a lift, or a widened opening.
How is this different from a sauna box sold online?
Single-skin plywood, a foil sticker standing in for a vapour barrier, and an unbranded heater — that is usually what those are. Ours use real insulation, a genuine foil barrier, an actual ventilation gap, and an imported heater with factory cover and spare parts held in Indonesia.
